Pelican 1510
Case Material
The 1510 case is injection molded
made from polypropylene copolymer. The material is
relatively light weight compared to how durable it
is. The material is also chemical resistant and will
usually exceed most users requirements. It will
perform under the most severe temperatures {-10°F
(-23.3°C) to +210°F (98.9°C)}. Needless to say your
equipment may not.
Colors
The 1510 case by Pelican comes
standard in three colors. Black (stocked by most
distributors), Desert Tan, and OD (olive drab)
Green. Desert Tan and OD Green was created in order
to cater to the military.
Latches
The case comes with 2 latches
located on the front. Each latch is made in two
pieces so opening the case is easier. The concept is
unique to Pelican and is called "double throw
latches." When applying upward pressure on the latch
part of it slides out prying against the stationary
piece of the latch allowing for easier opening. The
concept is similar to how a crowbar would be used to
open a jammed door. The stainless steel pin in the
latch will not rust.
HandlesThere are two
fold down handles located on the case. The first is
in the front and the second is on the right side.
The handle on the front is approximately 8.25" long.
The handle on the side is approximately 5.50" long.
Both handles have rubber molded into them which
creates a no slip grip. Again the pins used to hold
the handles in place will not rust.
Tilt Wheels & Extension Handle
The 1510 has a total of 2 recessed
wheels on the left that are close to flush with the
sides of the case. (helping to eliminate direct hits
when shipped). The extension handle is made of the
same material as the case and clips into place when
not being used. Just pull a small latch and the
handle can extended. When extended the measurement from
the ground to the top of the handle is 37.50"
tall. There is no rubber built into the extension
handle.
Outside Dimensions
Case Exterior:
22.00"L x 14.00"W x 9.00"D
Cardboard Box Exterior (Shipping
Dimensions): 22.50"L x
14.00"W x 9.25"D
Structural Ribs
There are a
total of 16 ribs built into the case (12 on the back
& 4 on the front) which add structural support to
the case. The latches and hinges are placed between
these ribs which account for added protection.
Purge Valve
Located in on
the front of the Pelican 1510 directly center is a
small dome like piece of hardware. This is the
automatic purge valve. It allows air to move freely
between the outside and inside of the case
equalizing pressure. Without it, opening the case in
high altitude would be impossible without drilling a
hole in the case. The purge valve requires no user
input and works automatically. It will not let
water, dust or other contaminants into the case.
Locking HolesThe Pelican
1510 case has 2 holes which fit standard size locks.
Each hole is located toward the outside each latch.
Plated in non rust metal, cutting the case to remove
the secured locks would
be very difficult and time consuming.
NameplateThe 1510 case by
Pelican comes with a nameplate on the front located
directly in the center above the purge valve. The
nameplate comes blank and can only be removed when
the case is open (as it slides out upward).
Directions are located on a brochure supplied inside
the case which will tell you the steps in order to
get the nameplate engraved. At the time of this
article the nameplate is sent into Pelican which
allows for 19 characters on 3 different lines. It
costs $9.95 each and is shipped within 2-3 days from
arrival.
Hinges
The hinges (2) of
which are located on the back of the Pelican 1510
case seem fairly standard. The pin is stainless
steel so rust will not be an issue. What makes these
hinges more unique however is that the pin can only
be inserted one way. This means a thief would not be
able to tap out the pins. Once in, these pins are
permanent.
